How to Discover Yourself in Fashion Through Social Media

A fashion TikToker's journey from building her confidence to inspiring others to create their own styles.

“During my year on TikTok, I have promoted a variety of styles on my page, and through it all - my followers gave me love.”

My Story

Fashion is the key to my self-expression. Through personal style, I have been able to become truly confident in who I am. This whole revelation started through my journey on TikTok. I created my TikTok in January of 2020. I began posting weekly Brandy Melville Outfit Inspiration, where the username “thebrandycloset” came from. I started on TikTok by posting 2 days a week and increased to posting every day. As I began to post videos more consistently, I had continued to gain a larger following. As I was gaining more and more followers, brands would reach out to me to have me promote their products - this was a dream come true. It is possible for you to do exactly what I am doing - be patient and give it time.

How to Grow Your TikTok

I get asked on a daily basis how I grew my TikTok - the answer is simple, but it can be hard to do. In order to gain a large following, you must be posting at least 5 days a week. The more you are posting, the more potential for the videos to go viral on the For You Page. A key element to remember is that NOT every video will go viral. There will be periods of time where your videos are low in views, and there will be periods of time where your videos are high in views. Do not be discouraged by low views, this happens to everyone - it is unreasonable to assume every video can go viral.

When you are posting, be sure to use relevant hashtags relating to what you are posting so the video can find your targeted audience - other fashion lovers! A significant aspect of maintaining a fashion platform on social media is posting content that you enjoy - do not completely focus your content around what your followers enjoy. Don’t get me wrong. It is awesome to know the interests of your followers and what they like. However, if YOU are only posting content that your followers enjoy, it will be extremely difficult for you to have the desire to continue to post every day. When you love what you are posting, and it is truly fun for you, your content will reflect that - this will help you grow your platform.

How to Grow Your Instagram

Another way that I have grown to be a successful fashion influencer on social media was through Instagram. Initially, I had created my Instagram account strictly for my TikTok followers to see me post pictures of my outfits and interact with me on another platform. Surprisingly, I grew my Instagram through Reels instead. Reels are short video clips that you are able to post on Instagram - similar to TikTok. I had seen my mutual followers grow their Instagram this way, so I gave it a shot.

I began to post all of my TikTok as Reels - this was a game-changer. My Instagram went from 3,000 followers to 15,000 followers in nearly a week only from posting Reels. A majority of my Instagram followers came from my Reels, not my TikTok! When I post a Reel, I also include a significant amount of relevant hashtags so the video can reach the targeted audience - fashion lovers! Besides Reels, I strive to post a few regular outfit inspiration pictures on my page. My followers interact with these, and they can even get on the Explore Page!

Instagram is the best platform for follower/creator interaction, all thanks to the story feature. I love posting polls and would-you-rather questions on my stories to interact with my followers! If you have a TikTok, make an Instagram too! When you have two successful platforms, they help each other grow. When someone is new to my TikTok, they might follow my Instagram and vice versa.

Confidence, Confidence, Confidence

Through my TikTok, Instagram, and other platforms as a social media fashion influencer - I have grown confident in what I wear and not care about what others think. My style has drastically developed over time, and it is an unexplainable feeling to have thousands of people who admire it. During my year on TikTok, I have promoted a variety of styles on my page, and through it all - my followers gave me love. This showed me that no matter what styles you wear, as long as you’re happy while wearing it, you have the best style. There will always be haters and those who try and bring you down, but stay passionate and positive about what you wear. Your clothing can resemble who you are, so, who are you?
